A mattress platform is needed to complete the bed.  We now offer a choice of Slats,  Bunkie Boards or a combination of the two.

Slats are sturdy, solid wood boards that are screwed securely to each bed rail on full length cleats.

Bunkie Boards are a mattress sized 3/4" thick board that is securely screwed into the cleats on each bed rail and the top bunk bunkie board has three safety wires attached under it as an added safety feature.  This provides a solid platform securely fastened to the bed frame making it one solid unit.  Bunkie Boards can be heavy and awkward to handle in assembly but do provide a very sturdy bed.  Many choose a bunkie board for the top bunk and slats for the bottom.  We use 3/4 inch medium density fiberboard with a melamine laminate on both sides.  This provides a very sturdy, safe base for the mattress.  The white melamine surface is smooth and easy to clean, as well as being kind to the hands that make the bed!

You can also go to the home center and buy the 3/4 inch sheet stock yourself.  For the twin size bunks the dimensions are 74½ x 38¼.
