Bunkie Boards are needed to complete the bed. The bed rails have cleats attached which holds the "bunkie board." This board is 3/4 inches thick and is designed to hold the mattress. It is securely screwed into the cleats on each bed rail and the top bunk bunkie board has three safety wires attached under it as an added safety feature. This provides a solid platform securely fastened to the bed frame making it one solid unit. Bunkie Boards can be heavy and awkward to handle in assembly but provide a much sturdier bed than beds constructed with slats.
We use 3/4 inch medium density fiberboard with a melamine laminate on both sides. This provides a very sturdy, safe base for the mattress. The white melamine surface is smooth and easy to clean, as well as being kind to the hands that make the bed!
$45.00 each bunkie board - cut to size with screw holes pre-drilled
You can also go to the home center and buy the 3/4 inch sheet stock yourself. For the twin size bunks the dimensions are 74½ x 38¼. Plywood is NOT recommended.
